EV Charging in Sun Prairie

In August 2023, City Hall installed new EV charging stations as part of a broader initiative to establish the Sun Prairie City Hall facility as a model of sustainability. The charging stations address the needs of city fleet operations, provide equitable charging access for community members, and contribute to Sun Prairie's sustainability objectives.

Project Motivation

The EV charging stations are a key element of our broader initiative to transform City Hall into a net-zero, all-electric facility. Our goals include:

  • Energy Efficiency: Integrating advanced technologies to reduce energy consumption.
  • Renewable Energy: Utilizing sustainable energy sources to power the facility.
  • Transportation Electrification: Supporting the shift to electric vehicles (EVs).
  • Sustainability Leadership: Setting an example for other municipal facilities across Wisconsin to emulate.

Sun Prairie's Green Fleet Journey

The City of Sun Prairie is committed to electrifying 50% of its municipal light-duty fleet by 2035, with all other light-duty vehicles being a hybrid or plug-in hybrid at a minimum. The below pie charts show the makeup of the city's light-duty fleet in both 2023 and 2024. Four vehicle types are included in the pie charts: internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, hybrid vehicles (hybrids), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and electric vehicles (EVs).  Between 2023 and 2024, the city's green fleet makeup (i.e. hybrids, PHEVs, and EVs) increased from 25% to 32%.
