Onboarding & Training

Sun Prairie EMS Onboarding & Training Process

Onboarding

Sun Prairie EMS will announce the expected start date at the beginning of an application process.  New employees are expected to make themselves available to begin work on that date.  The first day of work consists of administrative tasks and functions including completing the required employment forms with Human Resources, introduction to Information Technology policies/procedures, and orientation to EMS Department facilities, systems, uniforms, etc.

On-the-job Training

New employees are assigned to work with one or more experienced preceptors, who use a standard training plan to help measure and develop the new employee's paramedic skills.  New employees are required to work a minimum of six (6) 12-hour shifts within their first four (4) weeks of employment.  During this time, new employees will be provided ample opportunity to demonstrate minimum competency in clinical and operational aptitudes.  Sun Prairie EMS uses circular communications to share the new employee's performance on a daily basis between the new employee, the preceptor, and management.

Continued Learning

Once new employees have been cleared to work independently without preceptor oversight, they are expected to continue to develop and hone their education and skills.  The Department provides ample in-house training opportunities as well as partnering with other entities around Dane County and beyond.  To the best of its ability, the Department supports employees in their pursuit of continued learning and development at classes, conferences, and colleges.
