Post Referendum - What's Next?

We want to sincerely thank every resident who attended a referendum town hall, visited our website, tuned in to any coverage and/or sat in on a committee or commission meeting where the referendum presentation was given.

On April 7, the community voted 'no' on the referendum, rejecting a proposed property tax levy increase that would've allowed the City to improve public safety while maintaining existing services. Regardless of the outcome, we view the referendum process as a success. You engaged with us and made your voices heard - and that's how democracy should work.

We will continue providing services and programming to the best of our ability. However, it is important to note that $3.5 million will need to be cut from the budget over the course of three years, beginning in 2027. Staff will be bringing a proposal to City Council at the May 5 Committee of the Whole Meeting, with the suggestion that the elected officials take time to review and gather constituent feedback on the proposed reductions and their potential impacts. The goal is that Council would identify which reductions they want to pursue in July so this direction can be incorporated in the 2027 budget process.

We recognize the road ahead comes with significant challenges. However, we remain committed to being thoughtful and responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.

Safety Around Water with the Sun Prairie YMCA | Youth Program Room

The YMCA believes teaching water safety education in schools and other youth programs is one way to reduce drowning incidents among children ages 4 through 14. Join us for a 5-week series of lessons teaching children and their families about water safety:

Week 1, April 29: Pool Safety

Week 2, May 6: Community Helpers

Week 3, May 13: Helping Others
