[ARCHIVED] Construction Set to Begin for Wetmore Park East Shelter Project

Rendering of future Wetmore Shelter

The Sun Prairie Parks, Recreation, and Forestry (SPPRF) Department has initiated the construction of a new shelter at Wetmore Park, set to replace the current east shelter. The project, designed by Parkitecture + Planning, LLC, is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 25, representing a significant milestone in the City's continuous endeavor to improve recreational facilities for its residents. The demolition of the existing shelter is already in progress.

Many components of the shelter will be repurposed for other needs within the park system, such as cameras, doors, and other fixtures. Additionally, the Sun Prairie Fire Department will be utilizing the shelter for training purposes, prior to turning the shelter over to general contractor, Gilbank Construction, Inc.

The Wetmore Park east shelter project represents the second phase of improvements at the park, aiming to provide a versatile and year-round recreational space and restroom access for the community. Situated with sightlines of various amenities within the park, this modern facility will include an upgraded concessions area and an indoor space designed to support recreational programming throughout the year. The indoor area will also serve as a warming shelter for those who utilize the ice rink during winter months. Areas at each end of the shelter will provide covered seating that overlook the Tom & Rita Tubbs Splashpad and Playground and the ice rinks. An extended patio area will also provide ample space for various rentals and community events such as the Concerts in the Park Series, Juneteenth Celebration, Pridefest, and more.

The project is scheduled for completion in mid-May 2024, with plans to open the facility to the public by Memorial Day 2024. Until its opening, Wetmore Park will remain an active construction zone through May 2024. While the park will be open, parking will be limited and areas of the park will be blocked off. SPPRF is encouraging residents to continue engaging in recreational activity by visiting other parks during construction.

As part of the ongoing construction during the winter months, the Wetmore Park ice rinks will be relocated for the 2023-2024 skating season. The specific location for the ice rinks will be announced later this year, ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy ice skating in a safe and accessible environment.

“We are thrilled to see the construction of the new Wetmore Park east shelter finally underway as this is a significant investment in our community’s wellbeing,” said Kristin Grissom, Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry. “We are grateful to the Sun Prairie City Council, Parkitecture + Planning, LLC, and Gilbank Construction, Inc., along with all those who provided input to shape this project and make it come to life.”
