**Due to Covid-19 and the Dane County Order, City buildings are closed to the public. We are unable to take in-person tax payments at this time. Residents can pay by mail, drop box, or online with credit card or e-check. Please include your phone number on your check in case staff have questions regarding payment. For those with escrow checks, please make sure that all parties that the check is made out to have endorsed the back of the check before submitting for payment.
Update as of 12/14/2020: Tax bills are scheduled to be stuffed and mailed tomorrow. Residents should expect their tax bills to arrive by the weekend.
The City of Sun Prairie collects taxes for the City, the Sun Prairie and DeForest School Districts, Dane County, Madison Area Technical College, and the State of Wisconsin. Property tax bills are mailed in December after passage of the City budget. The city collects tax payments in December and January of each year and sends a share of the collections to the other jurisdictions.
Residents who are interested in verifying their property tax payment was made are encouraged to visit Dane County’s land records website accessdane.countyofdane.com. This website provides tax amounts due as well as payment dates. Residents are also able to call the City of Sun Prairie Finance Department at 608-825-1192 to inquire about payment or request a receipt electronically.
The 2020 tax year mill rate is $22.0061 per $1,000 of property value.
Tax Collection Period
The City’s tax collection period ends on January 31, 2021. All real estate property tax payments after that date should be sent to:
