Effective Monday, April 12th, 2021 the first-floor service counters at City Hall and the Westside Community Service Building will enter into its phased reopening to the general public. Both lobbies will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Staff will still be available for virtual appointments or for in-person meetings when other options are not feasible.

Municipal Court

Court proceedings will resume in person starting Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Moving forward, court will not take place during the last week of the month and will be on a trial basis. Community Development

The Community Development Department consists of three divisions – Building Inspection, Economic Development and Planning. Building Inspection

The Building Inspection Division staff will only be accepting in person or virtual appointments for technical assistance or inspection services.  Service counters for walk in delivery, pickup, or payments will not be available.   Please use the methods listed below for the applicable service.  

Please do not “pre pay” any plan review or permit fees.  You will be notified of any amount due when your submittal is processed.  A fee statement, permit placard, and other approved documents will be emailed to you upon approval of all plan reviews and permits.  Hard copies are not being created, so please print and post at the jobsite.

Field inspections will be evaluated as requests come in and conducted when it is determined it is both essential, and safe for both staff and our customers. Both  lobbies at the Westside Community Services Building and the Eastside Police Department will be reopening on Monday, April 12th. They will be closed during the lunch hour but open during regular business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Land line phones are available at both locations that have direct dialing access to the dispatch center.

Our County and our State have been continuing to have record setting reports of new COVID-19 cases.  It is impossible to look at the internet or turn on the television without seeing news of its spread.  In light of the increased positive cases and spread of COVID, we want to make sure that you are aware that the public safety team in the City of Sun Prairie is prepared to answer your call for service in the safest and healthiest manner possible.  

 To accomplish this, our police department is prepared to answer any calls for service and talk to our community members anytime, day or night.  Depending on the type of incident you are reporting or assistance you are requesting, for your health, and the health of our staff, our officers may make telephone contact with you prior to responding.  I realize that the weather is turning colder outside, but when we do arrive at your home, we may ask to visit with you outside to practice good social distancing.  Our team wears face coverings in all of our interactions with the community. 

If you need to speak with an officer, a telephone is available in the lobby 24 hours a day to communicate with our dispatch center. We are also cleaning all high touch areas regularly.  Many of our services are available online as well.  You can request copies of police records, make payments, complete alarm permits, file police reports, and report concerns and anonymous tips online. 

 Amid the stress and uncertainty, we want you to know that our team at the police department is prepared to serve you.  As we are out in the community to offer our services, we truly appreciate your adherence to the safer at home order so we can reduce the spread of COVID-19 quicker and everyone can return to normalcy as soon as possible.  Please continue to help your neighbors, continue to support our local businesses and restaurants, and continue to stay at home whenever possible.

Public Works

Residents may contact Public Works to request issuance of Recycle Center permits. City of Sun Prairie residents receiving city-sponsored automated curbside refuse / recycle collections can apply for a free permit to access the Recycle Center. Permits can be obtained by applying online and having them mailed to your home or by calling the Public Works Department. Further information can be found here.

Parks, Recreation & Forestry

In-person programming will resume May 1. Virtual and at-home programming options will continue throughout the summer as an alternative option for those who wish not to participate in person. 

Our Summer Fun Guide will be released on April 27 with a lineup of fun and engaging programming for all ages. The guide will remain in digital format and can be found online at 

The Family Aquatic Center will open on June 19 until August 21 this summer. A full schedule will be available in the Summer Fun Guide. Season pass sales will begin in May. The Wetmore Park Splashpad is currently under construction with an anticipated opening of July 2 or sooner. 

Those reserving city park facilities are asked to follow current Public Health Madison & Dane County mass gathering guidelines. 

Park facilities remain open, and shelter reservations are currently being accepted for reservation dates of May 8 – September 25, 2021.  Those reserving City park facilities will be required to follow all guidelines and executive orders put forth by Public Health Madison and Dane County.

A full COVID-19 mitigation plan has been developed and approved by the Parks, Recreation & Forestry Commission. A copy of the plan can be requested by e-mailing

Sun Prairie Media Center

The Sun Prairie Media Center will continue to provide services under its current policies, which is by appointment only. In-person KIDS-4 classes resumed last month.

Sun Prairie Public Library

As of Monday, November 23, the Sun Prairie Public Library will be changing how we provide services. The doors to the library will be locked. Patrons needing access to computers, copier, fax or scan may ring the doorbell during Express Service Hours. Occupancy and time limits will apply.   

Curbside service reservation procedures for holds pick up by appointment will remain the same. All remote and virtual services, resources and program will remain the same.  

Patrons that are experiencing difficulty in accessing library resources and services, including curbside reservations may email or call (608) 825-7323 for staff assistance.   

We will still be offering the same level of service but limiting and controlling physical access and occupancy. 

The library will continue to offer 24/7 Outdoor Bookdrop, Curbside & Express Technology Services. We continue to offer remote and virtual services including programs, digital resources, reference service, Programs to Go and Librarian’s Choice picks.
