Street Tree Trimming

Trimming Schedule
The City of Sun Prairie Parks, Forestry and Public Works Departments will be trimming street trees throughout the city during the winter months. Door hangars will be used to notify residents a few days in advance of tree trimming in their area.

Purpose of Tree Trimming

Trimming shapes the tree, removes dead wood, and lifts branches to a minimum height of 14 feet above the street and 10 feet above sidewalks. Pruning will prevent damage to limbs by snowplows, street sweepers, mail delivery and garbage trucks, along with promoting the health and development of the trees. Trees are pruned about every 4 to 5 years, so the pruning may initially appear severe, but the trees will fill in within a year.

Property Lines
If the trunk of the tree is on private property, not within 10 feet of the curb, the limbs will be trimmed just to the city right-of-way. The cut limbs will be stacked at the curb and removed by the city within days after trimming.
